About This Site
The Beach Ocean Gear is a family beach-day site. We write about the gear that gets a household of kids and grown-ups from the parking lot to the water and back again comfortably: pop-up sun shelters, big-wheel beach wagons, kids' life jackets, backpack beach chairs and leakproof cooler bags. Every guide is written from real days on the sand, with an eye on what actually helps grandparents and parents keep little ones shaded, safe and happy.

Beach and Water Safety
The articles on this site describe personal experience with beach gear and are not a substitute for safety instruction, swim lessons or lifeguard supervision. Always swim at a guarded beach when you can, check the posted flags and surf report before going in, and learn to spot rip currents. Children must be watched by an adult within arm's reach at all times near water, even when wearing a life jacket.
A life jacket or swim aid only protects a child when it is U.S. Coast Guard approved for their weight, fitted snugly and fastened every time. Arm floats, rings and inflatable toys are not life-saving devices. Check the label and the fit before each trip and replace gear that is torn or has lost buoyancy.
A sun shelter or umbrella reduces sun exposure but does not replace sunscreen, hats, shade breaks and plenty of water, especially for young children and older adults. Stake down tents, shelters and umbrellas firmly and take them down in strong wind, because a gust can turn them into a hazard to you and to people nearby. Hot sand, overloaded wagons on soft sand and lifting heavy coolers can cause burns, falls and strains, so pace yourself and ask for help with heavy loads.
